Aluminum wiring remediation: evaluating electrician proposals

Aluminum-wiring remediation should be evaluated by connection coverage and method, not by a promise to “check a few outlets.” The proposal should identify the wire type, every connection included, the approved repair method, device compatibility, access, testing, permits, and restoration. CPSC advises using a qualified electrician and treating warm plates, flickering lights, dead circuits, or a burning-plastic smell as warning signs.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s current repair publication says aluminum branch-circuit connections can be permanently repaired by replacement with copper or by the COPALUM method, and it explains that every connection or splice should be addressed for maximum benefit (CPSC Repairing Aluminum Wiring). CPSC’s safety recommendations also identify CO/ALR devices and qualified installation as specific considerations (CPSC aluminum-wiring recommendations). These sources do not set current local prices or approve every product marketed for aluminum wire.

What a credible proposal names

  • Wire scope: Branch-circuit aluminum, copper-clad aluminum, larger service conductors, and any direct-connected appliances should be distinguished. CPSC’s branch-circuit recommendations do not automatically apply to every larger-gauge service or range conductor.
  • Connection count: Outlets, switches, dimmers, fixtures, junction boxes, appliances, and panel terminations should be counted or sampled with a stated method. “Representative inspection” is not the same as full remediation.
  • Method: COPALUM, complete rewiring, CO/ALR devices where applicable, or another method should be named with its listing and manufacturer instructions. Ask who is trained or authorized to use a proprietary connector tool.
  • Access and finish: Open walls, attic access, furniture movement, box replacement, patching, and painting can dominate the field work.
  • Closeout: Request a connection map, photographs where permitted, test results, permit record, and written description of anything left outside the scope.

Do not accept a twist-on connector as proof of permanent repair merely because it is sold for aluminum wire. The CPSC publication describes the requirements of its recommended method; a bidder should explain how the proposed method meets the applicable listing and authority requirements.

If warning signs are present, stop using the affected device and get qualified help promptly. Do not open the panel or loosen aluminum terminations to investigate. A quote comparison is useful only after the electrical hazard is controlled and each bidder is using the same connection inventory.

Ask how the electrician will count connections: by opening every device box, by tracing each branch circuit, or by a limited inspection. Request that the proposal list devices connected directly to aluminum branch wiring, including fixtures and appliances, because those terminations can be missed when visible wall outlets are the only focus. Include box extensions where additional pigtails would make a box crowded.

If a bidder recommends full rewiring, ask what demolition is necessary and whether the new circuits also require panel, AFCI, GFCI, or grounding changes under the local permit. If a connection repair is proposed, ask for the connector’s listing, installer training, and a record of every repaired location. These questions make two technically different approaches comparable.
