Appliance diagnostic fees: credits, return visits, and written estimates
Compare appliance service calls by checking the diagnostic fee, credit policy, return visit, estimate detail, and warranty before approving repairs.
An appliance diagnostic fee pays for a visit and an assessment; it does not automatically buy a repair. Sears Home Services states in its diagnostic-fee FAQ that its fee typically ranges from $100 to $150 for most appliances, varies by service area and appliance type, and is charged on the day of service. It says the fee is waived when the customer proceeds with its recommended repair and remains due when the customer declines. Use those terms as a provider-specific comparison point and verify the scheduler price for your appliance and ZIP code.
Ask these questions before booking
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the exact visit fee? | Appliance category and service area can change it |
| Is it credited or waived? | A lower repair total may depend on this policy |
| What does diagnosis include? | Symptom review, testing, estimate, and parts identification |
| Is a return visit included? | Parts may not be stocked on the first trip |
| What warranty applies? | Labor and parts can have different terms |
Sears says its technician provides a complete estimate including parts, labor, and applicable taxes after assessing the issue. That is the useful handoff: the customer should be able to accept or decline a defined repair. A verbal “probably the board” is not enough for a repair-versus-replacement decision.
Same-category visits are not automatically free
Sears’ multiple-appointment FAQ says a full diagnostic fee applies to the first appliance in a product category, with a discount of up to 50% potentially applying to additional appliances in the same category. Different categories, such as a washer and range, receive separate full diagnostic fees under that policy. If you have several appliances, ask the scheduler to state the discount, category grouping, and whether each appliance gets its own written estimate.
That policy is not a reason to add unrelated repairs to one appointment. Bundle only appliances with clear symptoms and compatible access. A refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer may require different tools and parts even when scheduled together. Record the provider, date, category, fee, discount, and outcome.
The estimate should support a decision
Request the model and serial number, the tested component, the part number, labor, taxes, expected delivery time, return visit, and repair warranty. Ask whether the fee is waived if you approve only part of the recommendation. If the issue is intermittent, ask what evidence the technician needs and what happens if the symptom cannot be reproduced. Keep any access, stacking, vent, or plumbing correction separate from the appliance part.
Compare the net repair total with replacement cost after delivery, installation, removal, and site changes. A diagnostic fee that is credited can change the arithmetic, while a non-creditable fee remains sunk if you decline. Do not claim a repair is economical from the fee alone.
