Prove the converter is the failed component
Request the exact DTC, freeze-frame data, upstream and downstream sensor behavior, exhaust-leak test, misfire or fuel-trim review, and any backpressure or temperature evidence the technician uses. Replacing a converter while an engine is misfiring can damage the replacement. The quote should state whether diagnosis includes finding the cause of contamination or overheating. “The code says catalyst” is not enough detail for a complete estimate.
Compliance is part of the part number
The estimate should identify year, make, model, engine, bank, emissions configuration, direct-fit design, and certification or approval marking required for the vehicle and jurisdiction. Ask whether the proposal uses original equipment or an applicable approved aftermarket part and what warranty covers the converter and installation labor. Ask which flanges, gaskets, heat shields and hardware are included and whether fitting requires fabrication. Compare the installation work and supplied parts together.

Have the shop document the applicable replacement part for the vehicle and location, including any additional state requirements. Quote, installation, and handoff
Separate diagnosis, converter, gaskets, oxygen-sensor evaluation, hardware, fabrication, heat-shield work, tax, and disposal. Ask whether a damaged flange or seized fastener is included or billed only after approval. Do not accept a promise that any aftermarket converter will pass an emissions inspection. Inspection rules and permitted parts depend on the vehicle and location; the shop should document the applicable fitment.
After installation, the technician should verify no exhaust leaks, clear or document codes, confirm sensor data, and perform the manufacturer-appropriate drive cycle or road test. Request the warranty paperwork and a written explanation of the root cause. Compare quotes by compliant part, diagnostic proof, fabrication, sensors and gaskets, warranty, and what happens if the lamp returns. When a second quote proposes a smaller sensor repair, compare its test evidence rather than totals alone.
