HVAC condensate drain repair: clearing a blockage versus pump replacement

Separate a blocked condensate drain from a failed pump, pan, or float switch before approving work. This comparison shows what should be tested and which follow-on water-protection items belong in the quote.

The right condensate repair depends on where the water stops moving. A clogged gravity drain may need cleaning and a flow test; a failed pump needs a pump, discharge check, and float-control test. Ask for a diagnosis that identifies the pan, trap, drain route, pump, float switch, and termination. A quote that simply says “condensate service” cannot tell you whether it protects the equipment and the building. The equipment may shut off on a float switch when water rises. That is useful protection, but it is not proof that the drain is healthy. Ask whether the proposal tests the float’s electrical operation and confirms that water reaches the intended drain or pump discharge without leaking.

What changes the quote

Access drives the labor: an air handler above a finished ceiling, an attic platform, or a long concealed drain route can require protection and restoration. Pump replacement can also expose a discharge problem downstream. Ask whether tubing, check valves, pan treatment, and a secondary drain are included or excluded. Do not accept a “chemical treatment” as a substitute for locating a crushed or poorly sloped line.
