HVAC zoning retrofit: dampers, controls, and equipment compatibility

A zoning quote should show how multiple thermostats will coordinate with the equipment and how the duct system will handle one zone calling while another is closed. Resideo’s zoning design manual describes the core pieces as a zoning panel, thermostats, and duct dampers that direct air to selected zones (Resideo zoning manual). Its TrueZONE panel documentation also describes dampers opening and closing from zone thermostat calls and variable-speed fan control (TrueZONE panel).

Those components do not make every single-system house a good zoning candidate. The retrofit must address pressure, minimum airflow, equipment staging, and the physical duct branches.

Resideo’s damper page specifies 24-volt, spring-return operation and a maximum rated pressure for one model (damper specifications). Treat that as an example of why dimensions and ratings belong in the quote. It is not a recommendation for your duct size.

Compatibility questions

Ask whether the furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump is single-stage, two-stage, variable-capacity, or communicating. A zone panel may need a different interface for each. The contractor should explain what happens when a small zone calls by itself, whether the blower can reduce output, and how the system avoids excessive static pressure. Request measured static pressure or airflow at commissioning rather than a promise that the dampers “balance automatically.”

Access changes the total. Dampers buried in a finished ceiling, a low attic, or an uninsulated crawlspace need different labor than an open basement trunk. Include access panels, insulation repair, low-voltage wire, thermostat wall patching, and balancing in separate lines.

Use a zone-by-zone acceptance test

List every zone and ask the bidder to show: thermostat call, damper position, supply airflow, return path, equipment stage, and shutdown behavior. Test a call from the smallest zone and from all zones together. If the quote includes a bypass damper, ask what pressure target it is meant to protect and how it will be verified. Do not approve a design that closes most supply outlets without a pressure-management plan.

The practical next step is to give two bidders the same duct sketch and equipment model numbers. Compare the component list and commissioning test, then decide whether zoning solves the specific hot/cold-room problem better than duct repair or a separate system.
