Price a stair-railing replacement from a measured layout and a code review. OSHA’s construction guidance places handrails between 30 and 37 inches above stair treads and addresses clearance and strength for construction workplaces (OSHA stair rail interpretation). Those numbers are workplace rules and are not a substitute for your residential building code or authority having jurisdiction. A quote should state whether it replaces a handrail, a guard, balusters, newel posts, or the complete stair system.

The sources reviewed here do not establish a national installed price. Ask for a site visit that records stair geometry, post locations, material, finish, anchoring, wall condition, demolition, and inspection responsibility.

Define the railing system

Do not use “railings” as a catch-all. A wall-mounted graspable handrail has a different attachment and finish scope from a guard with posts and infill. The installer should sketch the proposed layout over a stair photo and identify each termination.

Measure before selecting material

Measure the stair run, landings, angle, tread noses, walls, openings, and ceiling or trim conflicts. Count turns and winders. Note whether the rail returns to a wall, ends at a newel, or continues across a landing. A straight rail in a narrow stair may be stock length; a winder or long open guard may need custom fabrication, extra posts, and more finish work.

Material choices include wood species, paint-grade stock, metal, cable, glass, and composite products. Ask how each is anchored and finished. A polished material does not eliminate blocking or a sound connection. If the existing post is loose, the quote should investigate its attachment rather than simply cover it with a new sleeve.

Code and safety review belong in the proposal

OSHA’s guidance distinguishes a stairrail from a handrail and sets requirements for construction work; it also calls for adequate handhold and clearance. Residential rules vary by jurisdiction and stair configuration, so ask the local building official or a qualified designer which requirements apply. Confirm permits, inspection, required guards, openings, handrail height, and egress before fabrication. Do not rely on a stock kit’s dimensions to establish compliance.

If demolition disturbs painted trim in a pre-1978 home, EPA says paid firms working in covered housing may need RRP certification and lead-safe practices (EPA RRP contractors). Include containment, disposal, tread protection, and wall patching. If replacing treads or opening the stair structure, separate that work from railing labor.

At final inspection, check graspable continuity, secure posts, smooth edges, consistent baluster layout, finished returns, and wall or stair repairs. Get the material warranty and finish-care instructions. Request two bids using the same sketch and code assumptions; compare actual components and attachment, not just the length of rail.
