Standby-generator ownership has two bills: the installation system and the recurring cost of keeping it ready. Compare proposals by generator capacity, automatic transfer switch, fuel and gas work, electrical service changes, pad and clearances, permits, commissioning, maintenance, and warranty conditions. The generator cabinet alone is a poor proxy for the installed project.
For an initial reference, Generac’s U.S. installation guide lists $8,000–$16,000 including the generator, system equipment and materials, and installation, checked September 7, 2026. Keep maintenance separate from a warranty claim. Generac’s published five-year air-cooled warranty excludes normal maintenance and costs caused by improper installation. Build the ownership worksheet
Up-front scope: generator, automatic transfer switch, pad, electrical feeder and control wiring, grounding/bonding work, fuel connection, permits, inspection, startup, and any service upgrade. Include trenching or wall penetration if the generator sits away from the service equipment.
Recurring scope: scheduled oil and filter service, battery checks or replacement, exercise fuel, annual inspections, remote monitoring subscription if chosen, and fuel consumed during outages. Gas availability and local fuel pricing determine the running expense; a quote should state assumptions rather than hide them in an allowance.
Failure and warranty scope: Ask who responds to a no-start condition, whether travel is covered, what maintenance records are required, and which parts are excluded. Generac’s warranty makes proper installation a condition, so keep permits, startup records, and service invoices.
Capacity is a lifestyle decision
Whole-home backup can require service equipment, load management, or a larger fuel system. Essential-circuit backup may keep a furnace, refrigerator, lights, and well pump operating with a smaller generator. Ask for the selected loads and their starting demand. The automatic transfer switch must be compatible with the generator and must be functionally tested after installation.
When comparing bids, ask whether maintenance is sold by the installer, the manufacturer’s dealer network, or an independent provider. A low installation quote paired with no nearby service coverage can cost more over the system’s life. Keep the model, serial number, fuel type, transfer-switch model, and maintenance interval together in a home file.

This is a cash-cost comparison, without discounting future expenses or assuming resale value. For fuel, ask the installer for consumption at the load being compared and multiply by your fuel price and assumed hours. Do not add an item twice if the service contract already includes it. Keep unplanned repairs as a separate uncertainty rather than inserting an unsupported annual allowance.
Include battery age, cold-weather starting, and exercise-test failures in the maintenance plan. Ask whether the service contract includes a transfer test, replacement battery, travel, and emergency response. Fuel can be available while the generator still fails because of a depleted battery, a control fault, or an automatic-switch problem, so a fuel-only budget is incomplete.
When selling or moving, preserve permits, startup records, warranty registration, and maintenance invoices. Ask the installer to label the generator disconnect and transfer switch and to provide the model-specific shutdown procedure. This documentation helps a technician diagnose a no-start call without repeating the original site survey.
