Water hammer repair: diagnosis before buying an arrestor

A banging pipe can come from a fast closing valve, excessive pressure, loose support, or a system condition an arrestor will not fix. Diagnose the source and compare placement, pressure, and access in the quote.

Start by identifying when the bang occurs and which valve just moved. Diagnose the sound before choosing a part

An arrestor absorbs a pressure wave; it does not secure loose pipe or correct every high-pressure condition. Watts’ placement practice recommends the end of a branch between the last two fixtures for a branch up to 20 feet, with an additional unit on longer branches. What a useful quote includes

Request measured static pressure, the suspected source fixture, pipe material and size, arrestor model, installation point, isolation method, and access. Ask whether the provider will inspect or secure exposed piping and whether a PRV adjustment or replacement is an alternate. Confirm that the arrestor is factory charged and whether the selected model is replaceable or serviceable; Watts states its Series 05 units are pre-charged and not rechargeable or repairable.

If the arrestor is installed inside a finished wall, the quote should include the opening, mounting, connection, pressure test, and access panel or restoration. A nearby exposed branch may be cheaper to service and easier to verify later. Do not accept a quote that names only “install arrestor” without identifying the source and placement.

Compare bids by result

Ask bidders to describe the test after work: operate the triggering valve, listen for the original impact, verify pressure, and check for leaks. Before the appointment, note whether the sound occurs on closing or opening, whether it follows one fixture, and whether a pressure reading changes when no water is running. Include that log with photos of exposed piping and the valve location. It gives the contractor a testable symptom rather than a request to install a part by guesswork.

Ask whether the provider will check the pressure at the hose bib or another approved test point and whether an existing PRV or expansion tank changes the reading. A branch with several fast-closing valves may need more than one arrestor, while a loose pipe may need support. The recommendation should name the triggering fixture and explain why the chosen location is reachable for future service.
