A whole-house humidifier is an HVAC integration job. ENERGY STAR’s residential humidifier report says these units are generally installed in forced-air ductwork by an HVAC professional, connect to a water source, use a humidistat, and need periodic filter or pad maintenance (ENERGY STAR report). Resideo’s HE280 product page lists an installation kit and calls for professional installation (Resideo product).

Resideo says its fan-powered model avoids bypass ductwork, which can simplify some installations (fan-powered product). That is a product feature, not a guarantee of lower installed cost; electrical access, drain routing, and cabinet space still matter.

What changes the quote

Ask where water comes from, where it drains, how the humidistat is located, and what happens if the drain blocks. A unit above a finished ceiling needs pan or overflow planning and protection. A bypass unit may need duct cutting and a bypass route. The bid should state whether the contractor patches insulation, seals cabinet openings, and tests the furnace interlock.

The capacity choice should follow the home and system, not just square footage. ENERGY STAR’s report discusses different humidifier types and maintenance requirements; it does not select the right model for every house. Ask for the manufacturer model, water use, replacement-pad part, and service interval. Controls deserve a written handoff: ask where the sensor reads humidity, what outdoor-temperature lockout or high-limit protection is used, and whether the blower must run to distribute moisture. Budget the ongoing cost

Separate equipment, duct/water/drain installation, controls, commissioning, and annual pad or filter service. Ask whether the plan includes labor for replacement pads and whether a clogged drain callback is covered. Do not treat the appliance’s product warranty as coverage for plumbing, duct, or labor.

The decision tool is a five-line scope check: air path, water, drain, controls, and service. Choose bypass when the duct path is accessible and compatible; choose fan-powered when bypass routing is difficult and electrical/drain work is acceptable. Get two bids with photos of the air handler and nearby drain. Ask each contractor to state whether the furnace blower must run, how the humidistat prevents over-humidification, and what happens if the water valve sticks.
