Windshield Chip Repair: Eligibility, Location, and Service Terms
How to decide whether a chip qualifies for repair, what location and camera limits change the scope, and what to ask for at handoff.
Windshield-chip pricing should follow eligibility, not a generic “repair” label. Safelite says its usual repair criteria include damage under six inches, an impact smaller than a dime, no more than three chips, and no blockage of a camera or sensor. Safelite windshield-repair page is a direct provider scope and says a technician assesses size, location, and age before injecting resin. Those criteria are Safelite’s stated guidance, not a universal legal rule or promise for every vehicle.
Size and location drive the decision
Tell the provider the chip’s location, approximate size, age and whether a crack reaches an edge. Provide photos for scheduling, but ask what inspection is still needed before repair can be accepted. Have the provider explain any visibility or camera concern and the proposed outcome. A preliminary phone estimate should say whether it can change after inspection and whether you would owe a visit fee if repair is declined. Get the estimate and approval limit documented. FTC repair guidance.
The estimate should identify the vehicle, damaged glass, number of impacts, mobile or shop service, taxes and warranty. Ask whether the proposal assumes the original windshield remains installed. If replacement is required instead, request a new scope covering the replacement glass and any vehicle-required camera calibration or related work. Do not assume those replacement steps or their charges are part of an ordinary chip repair.
Repair process and exclusions
Safelite describes assessing and cleaning the damage, injecting resin, curing it and inspecting the result. Ask how the provider defines a successful repair and what residual mark may remain. Have continued cracking, unsatisfactory appearance and later replacement addressed in the warranty terms. A repair quotation should make the intended outcome clear without promising a flawless-looking windshield.
If insurance is involved, confirm the claim arrangement and your payable amount before booking. Ask the provider and insurer whether a deductible applies, whether the repair provider is covered, and what approval is needed if the work changes to replacement. Obtain the self-pay total as a separate figure; a coverage statement does not establish the price charged to every customer.
Handoff and quote comparison
Inspect the finished area with the provider and collect the warranty, invoice and any post-service instructions. Record which impacts were repaired and whether any damage remains. Compare offers by eligibility, number of repairs, mobile charges and warranty. If one provider has rejected repair after inspection, ask why before comparing its replacement proposal with another provider’s preliminary chip price.
