Drain camera inspection: footage, locating, and quote scope

A drain camera is useful when a blockage or leak needs a location and a repair decision. This guide explains what to request on the video, what locating can and cannot prove, and how to compare inspection quotes.

When a drain keeps backing up, the useful deliverable is more than a camera ride. Ask for a viewable recording, the pipe section inspected, the observed defect, and a marked location or measured distance where possible. A camera inspection can show a crack, root intrusion, offset joint, belly, or remaining obstruction; it does not automatically determine the best repair or prove that every branch in the system is sound.

A view on the technician’s screen and a report you can keep are different deliverables. The SeeSnake Mini operator’s manual treats media capture, sonde locating, cable tracing, and report delivery as advanced options that depend on the connected monitor. Ask which of those services is included before booking. A reel’s product specifications alone do not establish what the company will hand over.

Locating changes the repair conversation

If a camera sees a defect but no one marks its position, the result may support a repair recommendation without telling an excavator where to dig. Ask whether the technician records distance from the access point, direction of travel, depth, and surface marks. Ask the technician to explain the confidence and limitations of any location or depth estimate. The report should identify what was observed on camera, what was located from the surface, and what remains an inference. Keep utility marking and any required survey separate from the camera service.

The report should also distinguish the private building sewer from a public main. Ask the local utility to confirm the ownership and maintenance boundary before approving excavation. A pipe’s position on a camera recording does not settle who must authorize or pay for work on it.

Compare the conclusion, not just the camera fee

Two low-looking quotes may cover different work. One may be a short view through a nearby cleanout. Another may include cleaning, a complete recording, electronic locating, and a written map. Compare access, footage, locating, and deliverables line by line. If the camera cannot pass a blockage or collapsed section, the report should say where the view stopped and whether the recommendation is a targeted opening, another access point, or cleaning first.

Use the video to decide the next paid step: repair a defined defect, obtain a second opinion on a major replacement, or monitor a condition that is not causing the backup.
