Gas range installation: connection service versus new gas piping

A gas-range installation quote should state whether it is a direct replacement at an existing approved shutoff or a gas-piping project. GE says on its delivery requirements page that its delivery agents need a natural-gas supply line with a functioning shutoff directly behind the range, a grounded 110/120-volt outlet, and the required space. It will not perform LP conversion in that installation service. If the shutoff is missing, inaccessible, or in the wrong location, the basic hookup is not the same job as adding a line.

Best Buy’s installation terms provide a similar scope boundary: gas-range service connects to an existing supply, tests for leaks, installs the anti-tip bracket, and lists new shutoff valves, flex lines, adapters, LP conversion, and custom carpentry as possible additional charges. These are provider terms, so ask your selected installer to confirm its own policy and local permitting.

Label the connection before accepting the quote

The distinction protects you from comparing a retailer’s hookup line with a plumber’s piping proposal. GE also says some state and local codes prohibit its hookup installation and that availability appears at purchase. A provider may leave an appliance uninstalled until an unsafe or incorrect valve is corrected.

Electric and anti-tip work still matter

Gas burners do not mean the range is electrically independent. GE’s requirements call for a grounded 110/120-volt outlet. Controls, ignition, lights, and the oven may rely on it. Confirm the outlet’s location, grounding, and condition before delivery. Do not ask a delivery crew to repair questionable wiring unless that service is explicitly included and performed by a qualified professional.

The anti-tip bracket is a safety requirement. GE’s bracket instructions warn that all ranges can tip and require the bracket to be secured according to local code. Best Buy says its installer will install the bracket, potentially drilling into the floor. Keep that line in the quote, particularly if tile, concrete, or a custom toe-kick changes the attachment method.

What a complete quote looks like

Request the model and fuel type, gas shutoff photo, outlet photo, cabinet opening measurements, and whether the old range is disconnected. Ask for appliance hookup, connector, leak test, anti-tip, delivery, removal, haul-away, permit, and any conversion as separate lines. If a new pipe route is needed, get a plumber’s scope before booking delivery. Avoid DIY gas work; the safe boundary is diagnosis and quote comparison, with connection and testing handled by qualified personnel.
