Dryer vent replacement: routing, materials, and wall repair

When a dryer vent is crushed, made of foil, or buried in an inaccessible route, cleaning is not the complete remedy. A replacement quote should show the route, diameter, elbows, termination, access, and any wall or roof restoration. Whirlpool’s installation instructions recommend rigid metal for performance and say flexible metal must remain accessible for cleaning; they also prohibit plastic or foil material in the vent system.

Whirlpool’s delivery page gives a useful installation boundary: its basic dryer service supplies an approved four-inch by eight-foot vent pipe and up to two elbows, but it expects the existing opening and utility connections to be suitable. A new route through a wall, ceiling, or roof is a separate construction scope. Treat the Whirlpool service description as a provider example, not a universal price or promise of local availability.

Draw the route before comparing bids

Ask each contractor to identify:

Whirlpool says 45-degree elbows move air better than 90-degree elbows and warns that screws extending into the duct can catch lint. It also says a hood should be at least 12 inches from the ground or an obstruction. These are design details worth checking in the written scope. They do not turn into a generic “code-compliant” claim without matching your local requirements and the dryer manual.

Cleaning versus replacement

If the existing metal route is reachable and intact, cleaning plus a new transition hose may be enough. If the line is crushed inside a finished wall, uses prohibited material, has excessive bends, or terminates behind a blocked hood, replacement is easier to defend. Whirlpool says lint and moisture can collect indoors when venting is improper, damaging woodwork, paint, wallpaper, and carpet. Keep that restoration risk visible in the quote rather than burying it in an appliance-service line.

There is no reliable national replacement price in the opened primary sources. Ask for a site-specific total and record whether the bid includes demolition, disposal, duct, elbows, exterior cap, labor, access equipment, and finish repair. A short accessible run may be a different job from a roof termination through finished ceilings. Comparing the two totals without route notes is misleading.

What the installer should test

The completed job should be checked for airflow at the exterior hood, a secure connection at the dryer, and a route that is not crushed when the appliance is pushed back. Whirlpool recommends the shortest practical run and as few 90-degree bends as possible. Ask for a photo of the concealed section before closing a wall. Gas and electrical changes are qualified-trade work; do not improvise a vent route around a flue or other utility.

Provide the dryer model, a sketch or photos of the current route, and the exterior termination. Ask whether the contractor will handle permits and who patches the wall. Drywall repair cost provides useful context for separating finish restoration from the mechanical vent scope.
