Mesh Wi-Fi vs Wired Access Points: Budget Equipment and Installation
Choose between wireless mesh nodes and Ethernet-backed access points by mapping dead zones, cable paths, hardware, PoE, and installation labor.
Mesh Wi-Fi is quick to deploy where running cable is difficult. Wired access points cost more in path planning and cable work, but they give each node a dedicated connection to the network. The right budget starts with a floor plan and an internet service requirement, then prices hardware and cable installation separately.
Eero says its nodes can connect wirelessly or through Ethernet backhaul, and that a wired connection can reduce wireless interference and improve speed, stability, and latency. Draw the layout before buying
Mark modem/router location, floor area, wall materials, stairwells, bedrooms, workstations, outdoor areas, and existing Ethernet jacks. For each proposed node, record coverage target, wired or wireless backhaul, Ethernet port speed, power supply, and whether PoE is required. A wireless node needs a strong link to another node; placing it at the dead spot can repeat a weak signal.
For wired access points, count cable runs, wall or ceiling plates, switch ports, patch panel, PoE injector or switch, attic/crawl access, firestopping, and testing. The cable installer should identify the route and restoration scope. Do not drill through structural members or fire-rated assemblies without appropriate qualified advice.
A budget worksheet with assumptions
Assume a three-node mesh kit at a hypothetical $450, plus an optional $100 switch for wired devices and $0 cable labor because the nodes use wireless backhaul. Total is $550. A wired design might use three hypothetical access points at $150 each, a $220 PoE switch, $180 of cable and terminations, and $600 of professional cable installation: total $450 + $220 + $180 + $600 = $1,450. These are assumptions, not market prices or a contractor quote.
Annualize the difference only if the wired design solves a real performance or reliability need. Include replacement and subscription costs for cloud management if applicable. Hardware that advertises a multi-gigabit wireless rate may still be limited by the modem/router port, switch, client device, and internet plan.
Make the technical comparison fair
Keep the radio generation, number of nodes, client devices, and internet tier constant. Measure wired throughput from a client to the router and wireless throughput at the same locations. Eero’s comparison warns that specifications assume wired Ethernet and that wireless-extender speeds vary with conditions. A mesh system can be the better value for a renter who cannot run cable; a wired access-point design can be the better scope for a long home, dense walls, or high-bandwidth fixed workstations.
Ask the installer whether the access points use a common controller, whether roaming is supported, and who owns the account. Confirm cable category, termination, testing, labeling, and warranty. Price ceiling mounts, surface raceway, and patching as separate lines. If a node needs PoE, include a compatible switch or injector; a power adapter alone is not the same installation.
The next step is a site map with two equipment lists: wireless mesh and Ethernet-backed. Compare the total installed scope and the locations each design serves. Do not count a coverage square-foot claim as a substitute for a measured cable path or a signal test.
