Orange, MA 200-Amp Service Permit: $100 First-Meter Fee

Use Orange, Massachusetts’s 2026 electrical fee schedule to compare residential service and meter permit lines at 200 amps or less.

By How we research prices

Orange, Massachusetts’s 2026 fee schedule lists $100 for the first meter plus $50 for each additional meter for a residential service of 200 amps or less. For a residential service over 200 amps, the first meter is $250, with $50 for each additional meter. The schedule’s service line is a municipal permit fee, separate from panel equipment, utility coordination, electrician labor, and inspection corrections. Read Orange’s 2026 fee schedule. Orange’s official town site identifies the Massachusetts permitting jurisdiction.

Apply the meter formula

A one-meter service at 200 amps or less starts at $100. Two meters use $100 + $50 = $150. Three use $100 + (2 × $50) = $200. If the service is over 200 amps, one meter starts at $250, which is $150 more than the one-meter 200-amp-or-less line.

The schedule counts meters, so do not turn the first-meter price into a per-amp rate. A 100-amp and 200-amp one-meter service fall under the same “200 amps or less” line in the published table. The fee does not tell you whether the utility, electrician, or building department will require other approvals for the work.

An electrical service upgrade can include panel replacement, a meter socket, grounding and bonding, a disconnect, feeders, and utility work. Orange lists $75 each for panel or meter-socket replacement and $75 for a residential branch circuit. Those are separate schedule lines that may matter if the filing includes those scopes; they are not automatic additions to the service line. A major appliance is another separate line: $80 for the first and $50 for each additional appliance.

Ask the electrician to identify the service amperage, meter count, panel or socket work, branch circuits, and permit lines on the application. If a quote folds everything into “permit,” you cannot test it against the schedule.

What the number means for a quote

For the narrow published service line, the comparison is:

  • One meter, 200 amps or less: $100.
  • Two meters, 200 amps or less: $150.
  • One meter, over 200 amps: $250.

The $150 difference between the one-meter thresholds reflects the schedule’s service-size category. It is not a price for a larger panel or utility service upgrade. Orange’s 2026 schedule is the observed municipal source; recheck the current fee sheet and permit classification before signing.
