Recessed lighting installation: new wiring and ceiling repair

The installed scope for recessed lighting is usually driven by ceiling access and finish work. Ask the electrician to identify the fixture listing, insulation clearance, wiring route, switching plan, and who patches and paints the ceiling. A quote for fixtures and labor alone can leave out the most visible part of the job.

The Department of Energy’s weatherization job aid treats recessed lights as ceiling penetrations that need air sealing and specifically distinguishes insulation-contact-rated work from other conditions (DOE recessed-light job aid). Build a comparable scope

A “six lights” request still needs spacing and circuit information. The electrician may need to open a ceiling, move insulation, install accessible junction boxes, or repair an undersized or overloaded existing circuit. If the room has a cathedral ceiling, plaster, tile, or a fire-resistance assembly, ask how the proposal protects that construction.

Air sealing and insulation are part of value

DOE’s job aid lists penetrations around recessed lights and exhaust fans among locations that should be sealed. That does not mean every fixture can be covered with insulation or sealed with any product. The fixture’s listing and the manufacturer’s installation instructions control. Ask for the exact model and whether the quote includes the prescribed air-sealing detail. Avoid a contractor who promises to bury an unapproved fixture under insulation without documenting its rating.

Dimmer problems are another hidden scope issue. The lamp, driver, and dimmer must be compatible; a switch that works with incandescent lamps may not perform well with a particular LED driver. If the project includes a dimmer, list that model as a separate allowance and ask who handles flicker or minimum-level adjustment after installation. The quote questions that prevent surprises

Request a fixture schedule, number of circuits, control locations, access assumptions, ceiling-repair allowance, and permit responsibility. Take before-and-after photos of the finished ceiling and keep the model numbers for future lamp or trim replacement. Electrical work above a finished ceiling should be performed by a qualified professional under the local code and inspection process.
