Portable generator connection: inlet, interlock, and service quotes
How to compare a portable-generator connection quote by inlet, transfer equipment, grounding, load selection, permits, and testing.
A safe portable-generator connection normally includes a listed inlet, transfer equipment or an approved interlock, correctly sized conductors, grounding and bonding review, circuit labeling, and a functional test. The generator’s receptacle and the cord are only one part of the system. Ask the electrician to describe exactly how utility power is isolated and which loads the generator can support.
Generac explains that a manual transfer switch uses a power inlet and prevents the dangerous condition in which a generator backfeeds utility lines (Generac manual transfer-switch guidance). OSHA’s generator-grounding publication points to NEC Article 250 for grounding requirements and emphasizes the integrity of the generator frame and equipment-grounding terminals (OSHA generator grounding publication). These sources support the safety and scope questions; they do not establish a universal installation price.

An “interlock” is not a universal metal plate. It must be listed for the panel and installed as the manufacturer specifies. Request the catalog number and a photo or diagram showing the generator breaker and utility main positions. A quote that says “backfeed breaker” without an approved isolation method is a red flag.
The generator changes the electrical quote
Give the bidder the generator model, running and starting wattage, receptacle type, and intended loads. Refrigerators, pumps, furnaces, and compressors can have starting demand that changes the selection. A system designed to run lights and a refrigerator may not support an electric range, heat pump, or water heater at the same time. Ask for a written priority list and owner instructions for shedding loads.
Grounding is not solved by adding a random rod. The generator, inlet, transfer equipment, neutral, and grounding conductors have to be evaluated as a system under the adopted code and the equipment instructions. Keep this work with a qualified electrician; do not improvise a panel connection with a cord-and-plug workaround.
Request separate lines for equipment, exterior box and weatherproofing, wiring route, panel work, permits, utility or inspector coordination, labeling, and testing. The result should leave a documented, repeatable connection procedure and a clear limit on what the portable generator can power.
Before approving the connection, ask for a one-line description of the utility, inlet, transfer equipment, generator, and selected loads. Confirm the inlet’s weather rating and location, cord length and connector type, and whether the generator placement follows the manufacturer’s operating guidance. These items are part of a usable system even though they may appear outside the electrician’s narrow bid.
Request an owner handoff that explains starting the generator, transferring loads, shedding a load before adding another, and returning to utility power. Keep the breaker schedule beside the inlet. A safe installation can still be damaged by running a portable generator beyond its rated output or by connecting loads whose starting demand was never considered.
