Slab leak repair options: spot repair, reroute, or repipe

Choose a repair method only after the leaking line and route are confirmed. “Slab leak” describes the location of the pipe, not a single repair. A spot repair exposes and replaces a defined section. The cost is the whole work zone

For a spot repair, ask how the location was found and how much slab opening is assumed. Ask whether the quote includes water removal, soil handling, pipe bedding, concrete replacement, flooring, and baseboards. A plumber may stop after pressure testing; a concrete or flooring contractor may finish the surface.

For a reroute, compare the number of fixtures served and the path of the new line. Ask which old pipe is capped, how the new line is protected, and where access remains for future service. A reroute can reduce concrete demolition while adding attic, wall, or ceiling restoration. The quote should show that tradeoff on a sketch.

For a repipe, request a fixture list, material and connection method, warranty terms, shutoff locations, and the restoration plan for every opening. A whole-house repipe can be reasonable where evidence shows broad deterioration, but the contractor should identify the observed condition and explain why a smaller scope is inadequate.

Compare bids with a decision record

Ask all bidders for the same diagnostic report, marked leak location, pressure-test result, and scope assumptions. Separate plumbing, excavation, concrete, drying, and finish work.
