Tire puncture repair: check repairability before buying a replacement

The first quote question is “Can this tire be safely repaired?” A shop must inspect the tire inside and outside, identify the puncture location, and consider previous repairs, casing damage, tread condition, and whether it was driven flat. A plug sold without an inspection is not a complete repair decision. Keep the car parked or use the spare according to the owner’s manual until a qualified tire professional evaluates it.

Discount Tire says it follows U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association guidance, limits repairs to the tread area, rejects punctures larger than 1/4 inch, and does not treat a patch alone as a proper repair. Its flat-repair page also says a tire that cannot be safely fixed should be replaced. These are the provider’s stated criteria; another shop may have additional manufacturer or tire-model restrictions.

Discount Tire’s public service page advertises free repair of most repairable punctures, including tires bought elsewhere, subject to inspection and USTMA rules. The provider’s service overview says it recommends replacement when a safe repair is not possible. That is a named offer, not a promise that every store will accept every tire.

Walmart’s tire page lists flat repair at $15 per tire and notes that parts, eligibility, and Walmart+ conditions apply. Walmart tire maintenance is a useful price example because it states the unit explicitly. Compare that posted service with the tire’s actual replacement cost and with any road-hazard coverage already purchased. Do not call $15 a national repair price.

Replacement is a fitment decision

If repair is declined, request the exact replacement size, load index, speed rating, and tread-depth comparison with the other tires. On all-wheel-drive vehicles, the manufacturer may specify matching circumference or limits on tread-depth differences. The owner’s manual and tire maker’s guidance control; a generic “replace one” or “replace all four” rule is not enough. Confirm whether mounting, balancing, valve/TPMS service, disposal, and alignment inspection are included in the replacement quote. Convert each per-tire line into a clearly labeled vehicle total before comparing offers.

Questions to write on the work order

Record puncture location, measured size, internal inspection result, prior repairs, repair method, warranty, and final price. If the shop cannot explain the safety reason for replacement, seek a second inspection, but do not continue driving on a questionable tire to save a service fee. A clear repair decision is worth more than a cheap line item that leaves casing damage undiscovered.
