Tire replacement: compare the installed total, not the tire price

The useful tire quote is the amount that gets four correctly fitted tires onto your car and back on the road. Start with the vehicle’s required size, load index, speed rating, and any staggered front/rear fitment. Then compare the installed total line by line: tire price, mounting, balancing, valve or TPMS service, disposal, tax, and optional road-hazard coverage. A low tire-only number can lose once the missing work is added.

Walmart’s current tire-maintenance page is a good example of why units matter. It lists $18 per tire for installation of Walmart-purchased tires, including mounting, lifetime balance/rotation, and a service pack; the same page lists a $3 service pack/valve stem line and says prices are per tire. Walmart tire maintenance is one seller’s offer, not a national installed-price benchmark.

Build the quote in comparable rows

Multiply only lines explicitly priced per tire. For the Walmart example, four installations at $18 would be $72 before tires, tax, and anything excluded. That calculation is a transparent application of the posted unit price, not a claim about what every store charges. Ask whether the service pack is already inside the installation line before adding it again.

Discount Tire describes a different comparison model: its tire purchase includes lifetime rotation and rebalancing, while free flat repair and inspections have their own conditions. Discount Tire’s service page says balancing is free for tires purchased there and paid service may apply to tires bought elsewhere. Put the value in a separate “future services” row rather than calling it a discount on the tires.

Check fitment before chasing a bargain

Do not substitute a cheaper tire with a lower load index or speed rating because the diameter looks close. Confirm the placard on the vehicle and the owner’s manual, and ask the installer to document any approved alternative. If only one tire is damaged, tread depth and the drive system may determine whether one, two, or a full set is appropriate; that decision belongs in an inspection rather than a generic rule.

A replacement quote should also state whether alignment inspection is included. Tire replacement does not automatically correct a suspension or alignment problem. If the old tires show a sawtooth pattern, one-sided wear, bulges, or impact damage, ask for the cause and a separate repair estimate. Use a decision worksheet

Before authorizing, write: vehicle and VIN; tire size; quoted brand/model; quantity; tire-only subtotal; installation subtotal; taxes; coverage; expected completion; and what happens if the shop finds a damaged wheel or TPMS sensor. Reject a comparison that omits any of those fields. The right purchase is the quote whose scope matches your vehicle and driving needs, with every per-tire charge converted into a clearly labeled vehicle total.
