Dedicated appliance circuit installation: what changes the quote

A dedicated appliance circuit is quoted from the appliance requirements and the building path, not from an arbitrary breaker size. Start with the exact model’s installation manual. GE’s dishwasher instructions, for example, specify a properly grounded individual branch circuit and prohibit extension-cord use for the appliance (GE dishwasher installation instructions). ESFI’s kitchen-safety guidance likewise treats major appliances and outlet loading as a reason to have a qualified electrician assess the circuit (ESFI kitchen safety). The exact circuit requirement still comes from your appliance manual and local code.
Quote elements that move the total
- Load and voltage: A dishwasher, range, heat-pump dryer, microwave, and workshop tool have different voltage, amperage, and connection requirements. The quote should name the appliance model and circuit rating.
- Panel capacity: A spare space is not the same as spare service capacity. The electrician may need a load assessment, compatible breaker, or panel correction.
- Route: A short unfinished-basement run is a different job from a long route through finished ceilings, masonry, an attic, or a detached structure. Conduit, cable protection, drilling, and fire stopping belong in the scope.
- Termination: Receptacle, cord-and-plug, hardwired connection, disconnect, GFCI or AFCI protection, and weather-rated equipment depend on the appliance and jurisdiction.
- Closeout: Permits, inspection, labeling, patching, cabinet access, and appliance reconnection should each be identified.
Ask for a line drawing or written route description instead of accepting “new 20-amp circuit.” A quote that includes only cable and breaker may omit access restoration and the final connection. Conversely, a quote for a new panel may be solving an actual capacity problem; compare that scope with panel upgrade work.
How to compare bids safely
Give every electrician the same model number, panel photo taken from outside the closed cover, appliance location, floor plan, and information about unfinished access. Ask whether the bid assumes the appliance is supplied with a cord, whether the receptacle is accessible for service, and whether the contractor reconnects the unit. GE specifically says the dishwasher must remain removable for future service, so a hidden or inaccessible connection deserves a question.
Before accepting a bid, request the load calculation or at least the appliance nameplate data used to choose the circuit. Ask whether the route crosses fire-rated assemblies, whether penetrations will be sealed, and whether the electrician is responsible for moving insulation back into place. For an unfinished basement, the route may be visible and easy to service; for a finished kitchen, the same endpoint can require careful cabinet or backsplash access. Also ask whether the proposed receptacle will remain reachable after installation, since future service is part of ownership cost.
Do not select a breaker or run cable from an online diagram. The useful decision is whether the bid matches the manufacturer’s installation requirements and explains the route, protection, inspection, and finish work. Those details tell you what you are actually buying.
