The key difference between manual and automatic transfer-switch quotes is the control and load scope. A manual switch lets someone choose generator power for selected circuits. An automatic transfer switch senses utility status and transfers according to the generator system’s controls. Both must isolate utility and generator sources so they cannot energize the same conductors together.

Ask whether the switch is service-entrance rated, where it will be mounted, whether the panel is being modified, and whether the quote includes the generator-side work. An automatic transfer switch installed without the correct control wiring is not an automatic backup system. A manual switch that feeds too many circuits can overload the portable generator even if the electrical transfer itself is safe.

Generac’s product information also identifies hardwired loads such as furnaces and well pumps as reasons a transfer switch may be needed. Ask the bidder to list the loads and their starting demand, rather than promising “whole house” from the generator’s running-watt rating alone.

Require separate lines for equipment, wiring, conduit, permits, utility coordination, testing, and finish repair. Never backfeed a panel through a receptacle. The transfer equipment and its installation should be evaluated by a qualified electrician for the exact generator, panel, and jurisdiction.

Ask for a one-line description of the system: utility source, transfer equipment, generator source, and selected loads. It should identify whether the neutral is switched, whether the switch is service-rated, and where the generator disconnect sits. Those details determine inspection questions and prevent a proposal from quietly changing scope after equipment arrives.

Commissioning should include a simulated outage, transfer, load check, return to utility, and owner instruction. For a manual system, request a written load-priority list. For an automatic system, request the exercise schedule and maintenance handoff. A quote that omits commissioning leaves the most important behavior unverified.
