Dimmer switch installation: LED compatibility and labor scope
A practical quote guide for dimmer replacements, with the LED, multi-way, neutral, box, and testing details that affect the work.
The main cost question for a dimmer switch is compatibility. A device can fit the wall box and still be wrong for the lamp, driver, wiring arrangement, or load type. Ask the electrician to list the dimmer model, fixture or bulb model, single-pole or multi-way arrangement, and any box or conductor correction included in the quote.
Leviton’s TSL06 instructions limit the device to compatible dimmable LED and CFL lamps, incandescent, or 120-volt halogen fixtures and warn against using it for motors or transformer-operated appliances (Leviton TSL06 instructions). Leviton also provides a compatibility selector for matching bulbs and dimmers (Leviton compatibility tool). Those are product-specific sources, so they support the compatibility questions rather than a universal promise that every LED will dim.

Do not treat “three-way dimmer” as a complete specification. Some digital products require a matching remote rather than a standard three-way switch. A smart dimmer may also require a neutral, a hub, or a particular app ecosystem. Record those dependencies before comparing bids.
The device price is only an allowance
A retailer or manufacturer listing can show a dimmer’s rating, but the installed job may include diagnosis of buzzing, flicker, low-level dropout, or an overloaded circuit. Ask whether the electrician is installing a customer-supplied device and what happens if that device is incompatible. A professional may decline a device that lacks the required listing or instructions.
For a kitchen or room remodel, count every control location and every fixture driver. Mixing lamp types on one dimmer can reduce performance; Leviton’s instructions recommend using the same make and model when multiple bulbs share a device. Keep the fixture and dimmer packaging for future replacement.
The safest request is a written model-to-model match, a labor scope for the existing wiring, and a test result at the final brightness levels. Electrical work in a wall box should be completed by a qualified person under local requirements.
Before the visit, count fixtures and record whether any lamp is an integrated LED module. Integrated fixtures may have a driver that is not interchangeable with a bulb, so the electrician may recommend a fixture-specific control. Ask whether the proposed dimmer has a neutral requirement and whether the existing box contains one. If the box is metal, crowded, or shallow, include a box correction allowance rather than treating it as an afterthought.
For a multi-location room, decide which location will hold the primary dimmer and whether companion controls are required. Ask for a test of the lowest usable light level, full brightness, and operation from every location. This turns the installation into a result you can verify.
