Under-cabinet lighting: plug-in versus hardwired budgets
How to compare plug-in and hardwired under-cabinet lighting by power supplies, cabinet access, controls, finish work, and serviceability.
Choose the wiring method before comparing under-cabinet-lighting quotes. A plug-in kit may need only mounting and cord management if a suitable receptacle is already available. A hardwired system can require a switch box, cable routes, a driver or junction box, cabinet drilling, and wall or backsplash repair. Both can produce good task lighting; they buy different installation scopes.
ENERGY STAR describes certified under-cabinet LED fixtures as direct task lighting that uses less electricity than older halogen or xenon designs (ENERGY STAR kitchen LED buyer’s guide). Feit’s manufacturer support page documents a current under-cabinet puck system that can be plugged in or hardwired with a separately sold converter (Feit OneSync installation guidance). These sources support the option distinction and product-specific accessory requirement, not a national labor budget.
Compare the two paths
Plug-in: Confirm the receptacle location, cord length, power-supply placement, and whether the cord remains visible. A backsplash, cabinet side, or cord channel may hide it. Ask whether the existing receptacle is protected and suitable for the location. A power strip behind a cabinet can create service and heat-management problems.
Hardwired: Identify the switch location, cable route, junction or driver enclosure, and access for future replacement. The installer may need to open finished drywall or backsplash, drill cabinet sides, add a listed box, or patch and repaint. The quote should say whether the low-voltage driver and hardwire converter are included.
Hybrid: Some systems use a concealed receptacle or a hardwired driver with low-voltage leads to each fixture. This can keep controls tidy while leaving the driver serviceable. Ask where it will be mounted and how it can be replaced without removing cabinets.
The worksheet that makes bids comparable
List cabinet runs, fixture type, total length or number of pucks, color temperature, dimming method, and whether lights are task or accent lighting. Then request separate lines for fixtures, driver/converter, electrical work, mounting, cabinet drilling, backsplash or drywall repair, and testing. ENERGY STAR’s efficiency label helps with product selection, but it does not tell you whether a particular driver is dimmable or compatible with your control.
Do not assume a product advertised as “hardwire capable” includes the converter or a code-compliant junction box. Feit explicitly treats its hardwire converter as a separate component. Match the quote to the exact kit and instructions. A qualified electrician should determine line-voltage connections and applicable local requirements.
Measure the cabinet underside and note lips, end panels, sink locations, and appliances before requesting a bid. A bar fixture may create continuous light, while puck lights can create bright spots and require separate leads. For a long run, ask where the driver sits and whether the total fixture load stays within its rating. Keep the driver accessible; replacing it behind a fixed cabinet can cost more than the original installation.
Ask the bidder to demonstrate the final control with every fixture connected. Flicker, uneven color, visible dots, or a switch that turns off only part of the run are installation or product-matching issues worth resolving before the backsplash is sealed. A written fixture schedule and a photo of the concealed driver location make later service much easier.
