Driveway crack repair: filling versus structural repairs
Classify driveway cracks by width, movement, and drainage before comparing filler, patching, slab work, or full reconstruction quotes.
The useful distinction in a driveway crack quote is whether it treats a surface opening or the movement beneath it. QUIKRETE lists different asphalt products for hairline cracks, cracks around ¼–½ inch, and holes or cracks greater than 1 inch (QUIKRETE asphalt repair FAQ). Product width is only a starting point: a crack that keeps widening, has displaced edges, or collects water needs a site diagnosis before filler is selected.
Record what the crack is doing
Measure width at several points and photograph the crack after rain. Mark whether edges are level, one side is higher, the crack branches, and whether weeds or loose aggregate are present. Ask the contractor to state if the repair is expected to be flexible, cosmetic, or structural. A proposal should describe cleaning, routing or preparation permitted by the product, filler, sealing, and cleanup rather than saying “patch cracks.”

QUIKRETE says Blacktop Patch is for confined potholes or cracks greater than 1 inch and must be compacted properly; it also says synthetic acrylic repair products address cracks approximately ¼–½ inch. It warns that patch is not a driveway resurfacer (QUIKRETE asphalt repair FAQ). That makes a material-only quote easy to misread: ask whether labor, cleaning, compaction, sealer, and traffic restrictions are included.
Check the water path
Cracks near the garage, low edge, or a downspout can be symptoms of runoff and erosion. UMN Extension says developed surfaces increase runoff and recommends evaluating slope, soil, and drainage paths before landscape changes (Minimizing runoff from shoreland property). Ask whether the provider has inspected downspouts, edge drainage, and soft subgrade. Filling a crack without correcting a recurring water path may simply restart the cycle.
Compare repair with replacement
Use a replacement quote when cracking is widespread, sections have shifted, or the base is failing. Ask it to identify demolition, haul-off, subgrade correction, base, new surface, transitions, and drainage. A repair quote should state the limits of its warranty, especially exclusions for movement, frost, water, and adjacent construction. Compare the scope and expected service life assumptions instead of choosing the smallest line-item total.
Before bids, clear vehicles and measure access for equipment. Mark utilities and property lines; do not allow excavation based on guesswork. Ask each provider to return a photo-marked plan with repair locations, materials, curing or traffic time, and any excluded structural work. Link the decision to driveway replacement when the surface problem is part of a larger reconstruction. That record is more useful than a generic promise that the cracks will “look better.”
