Patio leveling: lifting slabs versus replacing the surface
Decide whether a settled patio needs lifting, base correction, drainage work, or replacement by tracing the cause and defining the finished surface.
Patio leveling is a diagnosis before it is a technique. A settled slab can be lifted or supported if the concrete is sound, while widespread cracking, poor drainage, or a failing base may make replacement more sensible. Belgard notes that major defects in an existing concrete base can compromise an overlay and that drainage must be planned around the new surface (Belgard overlay guidance). Ask the contractor to identify the cause and the finish you will receive.
Map the movement
Photograph the patio with a straightedge or level across the worst transition, then mark doors, steps, drains, and the direction of slope. Ask whether the dip is isolated, whether slabs have broken, and whether water is collecting at the foundation. A leveling proposal should state the lifting or support method, injection material or base work, access holes, patching, and expected finished tolerance. “Level” may mean flat, but patios often need a deliberate drainage slope; define the desired elevations instead.
Compare the three common scopes

Belgard describes overlays as potentially reducing excavation and disposal, but warns that the added thickness can create clearance and transition problems. It also says drainage holes or other measures may be needed where water enters joints over an impervious base (Installing pavers over asphalt or concrete). A quote that sells an overlay without measuring the door sill and step elevations is not ready.
Include drainage and access
If the patio settled because water washes out soil, lifting it without routing the water can repeat the failure. UMN Extension says runoff planning should account for slope, soil, vegetation, and existing drainage, and recommends using natural drainage paths where possible (Minimizing runoff from shoreland property). Ask whether downspouts, edge drains, or a discharge route need to be corrected as a separate line.
Access changes the job. Measure gates and identify whether a pump, skid steer, or concrete saw can reach the patio. Require protection for siding, planting beds, and adjacent surfaces. Price demolition, haul-off, base replacement, surface material, jointing, and restoration separately so a “repair” total cannot hide exclusions.
Before accepting, ask the provider to mark the finished elevations at the house, steps, and lawn and to explain how water will move after rain. Include a written warranty that states what movement is covered and for how long; a warranty without its trigger or exclusions is not comparable. If the assessment finds structural cracking or a retaining-wall load, use a qualified designer rather than treating it as a cosmetic leveling job.
