GFCI outlet replacement: device price versus installed work

A quote guide for separating the GFCI device from testing, box, wiring, permit, and access work that can change the installed total.

Replacing a GFCI receptacle can be a simple device swap, or it can expose a wiring, box, or protection problem. Compare quotes by asking what is included around the device: identifying line and load conductors, checking the grounding path, testing downstream outlets, replacing a damaged box, and documenting any permit or inspection requirement. The price printed on a package covers none of that installed scope.

GFCI protection is intended to interrupt power when current leaks from the normal circuit path, reducing shock risk. The Consumer Product Safety Commission explains that receptacle GFCIs can protect one outlet or downstream outlets and should be tested monthly (CPSC GFCI fact sheet). Leviton’s installation sheet warns that a GFCI must match the wiring, location, and applicable local and national codes (Leviton GFCI instructions).

What the quote should identify

Device specification A 15- or 20-amp rating, self-test feature, tamper resistance, and weather resistance must fit the circuit and location.
Line/load identification A feed-through GFCI may protect other receptacles. The electrician should identify and label the protected downstream outlets.
Box and conductors A crowded, damaged, or shallow box may need replacement or extension. Aluminum conductors require compatible devices and methods.
Grounding and polarity tests A new device cannot correct an open ground, reversed conductors, or a fault elsewhere without additional work.
Access and finish Finished tile, cabinets, exterior siding, or a locked area can add access and restoration work.

Do not accept “replace outlet” as a complete description if the device keeps tripping. A trip can be the protection operating correctly, a defective appliance, moisture, a downstream fault, or a miswired connection. The diagnostic step should be listed separately from any repair that follows. The electrician should also test the device using the manufacturer’s test and reset controls after installation; the Leviton instructions specifically call for testing and warn that weather-exposed installations need a listed weather-resistant device and a weatherproof cover.

Device example versus installed price

Use the device model as an example, not as a promise of what your local job will cost. On September 7, 2026, Leviton’s U.S. store listed its GFTR1 15-amp self-test tamper-resistant GFCI from $29.52 and its GFWT1 15-amp weather-resistant version from $31.72 (Leviton GFCI store). Those are product-only examples; tax, shipping, plate or cover, labor, inspection, and the condition of the existing wiring are separate. Ask each bidder for the exact device model, whether the wall plate and cover are included, and whether disposal of the old device is included. Ask for an hourly or fixed diagnostic charge if the outlet does not pass testing.

The useful comparison is total scope: device, labor, testing, parts discovered during the visit, permit, and finish work. If one quote includes replacement of a box and the other assumes the existing box is reusable, the numbers are not comparable.

Questions to send with a photo

Send a photo of the receptacle face, the room or exterior location, and the panel label if safe to do so. Ask whether the bid includes identifying all outlets losing power during the test, correcting unsafe upstream wiring, and a written explanation of any unresolved fault. Do not remove the cover or work inside the box to provide a better photo. Electrical work should be performed by a qualified person under local rules.
