Induction range conversion: appliance and electrical upgrade budgeting

Switching from gas or a smaller electric range to induction can be a circuit project disguised as an appliance purchase. Whirlpool says in its delivery guidance electric or induction cooktops and wall ovens typically require at least 240 volts, while its installation page expects the outlet and wiring to meet the model and local code. GE’s electric-range requirements call for 240-volt service and an outlet within four feet; its delivery agents cannot direct-wire electric ranges. Confirm the exact model manual before ordering.

Price the conversion in two scopes: the appliance and delivery/installation, then the electrical work needed to supply it. A retailer installation price assumes a suitable existing connection. Best Buy’s installation terms list electric hardwire as an add-on and say converting gas to electric may require an electrician or local gas provider. That is why a product-only comparison can understate the project.

Map the existing service

Ask an electrician to identify the panel space, breaker size, circuit route, conductor condition, receptacle type, and whether the old gas line must be capped by a qualified gas professional. Do not infer the circuit from the old range’s cord. The new unit’s installation instructions control. A circuit may be nearby yet still lack capacity, proper grounding, or a suitable cable route.

GE also requires an anti-tip bracket where the range instructions call for one. Its bracket PDF says all ranges can tip and the device must be secured to local code. Include the bracket and any tile or concrete attachment issue in the quote. Best Buy similarly includes anti-tip installation in its range scope but may charge for work outside the direct replacement.

Keep installation and conversion distinct

Whirlpool lists a $39 in-home major-appliance delivery charge on its site, with availability and checkout pricing varying by address. That is a concrete delivery example, not the cost of an induction conversion. Ask the retailer to show delivery, installation, haul-away, and cord or connection parts separately. Ask the electrician for a site-specific price and whether permitting is included.

There is no opened primary source that supports a national price for the electrical upgrade. Use the panel and route inspection to compare bids. A short accessible run may be far less involved than a finished-wall route or a panel that needs expansion. Do not count future energy savings as guaranteed unless you have model-specific utility data.
