Range hood installation: ducted versus recirculating budgets

Compare a ducted range hood with a recirculating installation by separating the appliance, electrical supply, duct route, filters, and cabinet work.

The first budget decision is whether the hood will exhaust outdoors or filter and return air to the room. A ducted hood needs a compatible exterior route, wall or roof cap, and possibly cabinet or drywall work. A recirculating hood avoids that route but requires the manufacturer’s charcoal or other filter setup and does not create the same exterior exhaust path. Best Buy’s installation terms list range hood and over-the-range services separately and say additional duct work, vent-direction changes, electrical receptacles, and custom carpentry can be extra charges.

That makes “hood installation” an incomplete line item. Ask the seller to price the hood, delivery, mounting, electrical connection, filters, duct transition, exterior termination, and finish work as separate components. There is no reliable universal installation price in the opened primary sources; the right comparison is a site-specific scope.

Best Buy’s terms say its OTR service connects to existing ductwork, can adjust the blower for that duct, and installs a charcoal filter for a ductless application. It also lists additional charges when changing a round vent to rectangular, adding ductwork, or converting external exhaust to recirculation. Those conditions are useful questions for any installer even if you buy elsewhere.

Whirlpool’s appliance installation page makes the same boundary clear for microwave/hood combinations: the installer verifies that existing venting meets manufacturer specifications, supplies no venting, and does not modify cabinets or ductwork. It will not connect to hazardous or incorrectly sized ducting. If your project is a standalone hood, read the hood manual for exact duct diameter and clearances rather than copying an adjacent model.

Cabinet and electrical checks

Measure the hood opening, mounting height, cabinet bottom, and the path from the exterior wall or roof. Photograph the outlet and the duct connection. If a recirculating hood needs a new receptacle, ask whether a licensed electrician is included. Tile, stone, and metal backsplashes may require different anchors or an additional labor line. The installer should identify who repairs holes or paint when an old hood footprint differs.

For a ducted design, ask where the air exits and whether the contractor can inspect the entire route before ordering. A short wall exit has a different labor profile from a roof penetration or a long concealed run. Do not let a low mounting price conceal duct fabrication, permits, or a missing exterior cap.

A decision that survives the quote

Choose ducted when the route is practical and outdoor exhaust is a priority. Choose recirculating when the building cannot accept a duct route and you accept ongoing filter replacement. Have the installer write the fan model, duct size, termination, electrical work, and testing into the proposal. Record the provider, location, date, and any filter price separately; a product price is not an installed total.
