NYC Bulk Item Pickup: Free Curbside Limits and Special Rules
NYC offers free curbside bulk removal up to six items per collection day, with special rules for appliances and mattresses.
New York City residents can use free curbside removal for large items, but the service is capped at six items per collection day. DSNY says appointments are no longer offered; residents use the address’s collection schedule. DSNY’s large-item page and NYC311’s instructions provide the current process.
For an ordinary setout of six accepted items, the city charge is $0, so the practical cost is preparation and timing. Non-recyclable items go out the night before the trash-only collection day; metal and rigid plastic go out the night before recycling collection. A seventh item is outside the published free limit and needs another collection day or disposal route. Do not translate “free” into “any item, any day.”
Special materials change the decision. NYC lists separate rules for mattresses and box springs, refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, electronics, rugs, carpets, and tires. Refrigerators, air conditioners, and other CFC appliances require a CFC-removal appointment. Mattresses and box springs must be fully encased in a sealed plastic bag or plastic covering before setout. Small amounts of homeowner-generated construction debris may be eligible under DSNY’s separate rules, so check the material page instead of assuming all debris is excluded.
Before setting anything out, use the address-specific schedule, count each item, separate recyclable material, and check the special rule for appliances or mattresses. If the item cannot wait for the next collection day, price a licensed private service separately; the DSNY pages do not provide a private-hauler price. This page answers the municipal-cost decision: within six qualifying items and correct timing, NYC’s published curbside charge is free.
