Sod installation: soil preparation, quantities, and establishment costs
Build a sod quote from measured area, soil preparation, delivery timing, installation, and the first weeks of watering.
The sod itself is only one line in a complete installation quote. Soil testing, weed removal, grading, amendments, delivery, laying, rolling, watering, and follow-up can determine whether the lawn knits into the site. University of Maryland guidance says seed and sod both need a prepared surface, and Utah State Extension warns that poor preparation can lead to establishment and water-stress problems years later (USU turf soil preparation). Ask for each component instead of comparing a material-only price with a turnkey proposal.
Measure before asking for a price
Draw the lawn as rectangles and triangles, calculate square footage, and note beds, walks, slopes, gates, and areas that will remain planted. Ask the installer whether the quote includes an allowance for offcuts and seams. Sod is sold in rolls or strips, so the supplier’s unit and delivery minimum matter. Your estimate should identify the turf type, grade or cultivar, and whether the sod is grown for the conditions at your site; a cheaper grass that dislikes shade or soil moisture creates follow-up cost.
Separate preparation from placement
USU Extension lists soil testing, weed control, compaction relief, compost, and irrigation planning as preparation decisions. It cautions that imported topsoil is not automatically better and says additional soil is most defensible when grade must be raised or existing material cannot be cultivated (USU turf soil preparation). A quote should therefore state whether it includes:

Maryland’s new-lawn guidance gives a useful preparation benchmark: where a soil test shows low organic matter, it describes applying 1–2 inches of compost and blending it into the soil; it also says to touch up grading to create an even seed bed (Starting a New Lawn). Those are regional recommendations, not a universal order for every property. A contractor should base amendments on your soil test and site conditions.
Price establishment as part of the job
USU says sod should be laid within 24–48 hours of delivery to avoid decomposition and drying. After placement, the source calls for rolling, checking that water reaches the underlying soil, and maintaining moist rather than saturated conditions for roughly 10–14 days while roots establish (USU turf soil preparation). Put the responsibility in writing: who waters if delivery is delayed, whether a temporary irrigation setup is included, and what “established” means for any workmanship warranty.
Do not accept a guarantee that ignores weather, turf type, irrigation, or foot traffic. Keep people and equipment off new sod until it is rooted and has been mowed several times, and ask the installer for care instructions suited to the grass. The most useful comparison is the delivered, prepared, watered, and established lawn—not the pallet price alone.
