Sprinkler leak repair: locating the fault and restoring the lawn
Separate a visible head replacement from a buried-line or valve repair by checking diagnosis, access, water testing, and surface restoration.
Water pooling in one spot does not prove that the nearest sprinkler head is the leak. EPA WaterSense lists leaking joints, pressure problems, valves that do not close, and underground leaks as possible sources, and recommends inspecting each zone for broken heads and pooling between cycles (Sprinkler Spruce-Up). The first cost question is therefore diagnostic scope: is the provider testing the zone and locating the fault, or selling a visible-part replacement?
Sort symptoms by location
Record when the water appears. A puddle only during a cycle points toward a pressurized head, fitting, or lateral line. A wet spot while the system is off can point toward a valve that fails to close, a joint, or another water source. Brown grass can indicate undercoverage rather than a leak. EPA says heads that do not pop up fully or are tilted can spray incorrectly, while pooling between cycles can indicate an underground leak (Sprinkler Spruce-Up). These are diagnostic clues, not a remote diagnosis.

Ask for the test result and the exact area to be opened. “Fix leak” is not enough if access through a mature bed or driveway is possible. Require the provider to identify whether it will hand-excavate, use locating equipment, or expose a defined trench; do not assume that a diagnostic visit includes excavation or replacement parts.
Price restoration separately
Restoration can include backfill, settlement correction, topsoil, seed, sod, mulch, or replacing a cut hardscape. EPA notes that broken heads and pipe cracks can waste water and money, and encourages a certified irrigation professional when the repair is uncertain. Its professional certification page distinguishes installation/maintenance providers from auditors (WaterSense professional certification). Ask whether your repairer can provide both the physical fix and a zone audit, or whether those are separate appointments.
After repair, require a run test of every affected zone and a written note of the controller schedule. WaterSense recommends monitoring for soggy or dry areas after controller work and correcting overspray; the controller cannot compensate for malfunctioning sprinklers (Irrigation Controllers technical sheet). A successful repair is a tested system and a restored surface, not merely a replaced fitting.
Before the visit, photograph the wet area, flag heads and valve boxes, and note whether the meter moves when all indoor and outdoor fixtures are off. Share the irrigation plan if you have one. This evidence lets the provider quote the likely diagnostic scope without promising a repair method that the inspection has not established.
