Ungrounded outlet upgrades: protection options and rewiring scope

How to compare ungrounded-outlet proposals by GFCI protection, equipment grounding, rewiring access, labels, testing, and code jurisdiction.

An ungrounded two-slot outlet has several possible upgrade paths, and the quote should say which one is being purchased. Replacing it with a three-slot receptacle does not create an equipment grounding conductor. A proposal may instead run a new grounding conductor or install GFCI protection with the labels required by the applicable rules. Ask for the circuit-by-circuit method, testing, and any wall access.

The CPSC home-wiring guide explains that a GFCI receptacle can replace an older two-slot receptacle and must be labeled “No Equipment Ground—GFCI Protected” when no equipment grounding conductor exists (CPSC home wiring hazards guide). These sources support the distinction between shock protection and grounding; local code and the authority having jurisdiction decide what is permitted for the project.

The right option depends on the appliance and the building. Some equipment uses a grounding path for fault clearing and noise control; GFCI protection reduces shock risk but is not the same as a grounded receptacle. Ask the electrician to identify any devices for which the proposed option is unsuitable and to document the labels left in place.

Price differences usually follow access. A basement ceiling can expose a route; plaster walls, masonry, tile, or a finished second floor can require selective openings and restoration. Count outlets and include switch boxes, junction boxes, and hardwired appliances rather than pricing only the visible receptacles.

Do not use an adapter to turn a two-slot outlet into a grounded three-slot outlet or remove the grounding pin from a cord. Send bidders a room list and photos from outside the closed boxes. A qualified electrician should test polarity, protection, and grounding conditions and should identify unresolved wiring before the work is closed behind finishes.

Ask whether the outlet is part of a shared circuit, whether downstream receptacles will lose power during a GFCI test, and whether surge-sensitive equipment or plug-in protectors change the recommendation. Request labels at each protected outlet and a written test result. If rewiring is selected, compare the number of new cable runs and access openings rather than counting receptacles alone.

For a rental, older condo, or historic property, ask who is responsible for permission to open common walls and who restores fire-rated assemblies. The cheapest device swap may be the wrong scope if it leaves an ungrounded circuit, inaccessible splice, or unlabeled GFCI protection behind the finished wall.
