Whole-house surge protection: comparing installed options
A scope-first comparison of panel-mounted and external surge protective devices, including ratings, compatibility, warranties, and installation questions.
Compare whole-house surge protection by the device’s listing, system compatibility, lead length and location, breaker or disconnect requirements, and replacement or warranty terms. The installed total depends on the panel and the electrician’s access to it. A product page can establish what a particular surge protective device is designed to do; it cannot establish a national installation price.
Eaton describes residential surge protective devices as equipment that diverts transient energy away from connected electronics and lists internal, external, and integrated-loadcenter options (Eaton complete home protection). Its SP1 installation manual warns that incorrect voltage selection or wiring can cause injury or equipment damage and limits installation to licensed or qualified electricians (Eaton SP1 manual). Eaton recommends combining service-entrance and point-of-use protection for its product family. Treat that as the manufacturer’s recommendation for its system, not as proof that every home needs a specific package. A whole-house SPD also does not repair bad grounding, protect every signal cable, or guarantee that electronics survive a direct lightning event. Ask the electrician whether coaxial, telephone, data, or generator circuits need separate treatment.
How to read a price difference
A higher quote may include an exterior weather-rated enclosure, a new breaker, panel rearrangement, grounding corrections, or an inspection. A lower quote may be a device-only allowance. Require the model number, listing, enclosure rating, breaker size, permit line, and functional status check in both bids. If the installer proposes a new panel at the same time, compare it with the existing panel-upgrade scope rather than treating the SPD as the main cost.
Ask for a written limitation on warranties. Connected-equipment coverage commonly requires proof of proper installation and may exclude certain losses. Keep the invoice, model, installation date, and any test result with your electrical records. The right comparison is a documented protective device matched to the panel, with a clear path for replacement when its status indicator says protection has ended.
