Compare home Ethernet wiring by the number and route of permanent runs, cable category and jacket rating, terminations, patch-panel or enclosure plan, test report, and wall or ceiling restoration. “Run Ethernet to the office” is incomplete until the start point, outlet, pathway, and equipment location are defined.
CommScope’s Category 6 product specification identifies solid four-pair cable, 100-ohm impedance, a 250 MHz maximum operating frequency, and support for remote powering when installed under the listed standards (CommScope Category 6 specification). Leviton’s residential-networking guidance recommends sizing a structured-media enclosure for the number of connections and future needs, and warns against placing it directly beside large appliances or electrical panels (Leviton residential networking). A comparable run schedule
Create a table with room, outlet count, cable category, approximate route, termination type, and device purpose. A run to a desk may be one outlet; a ceiling access point, camera, or media cabinet may need a different mounting and PoE plan. Ask for solid horizontal cable, matching jacks and patch panel, labels at both ends, and a certification or continuity test appropriate to the promised category.
The path matters more than the visible wall plate. Unfinished attic or basement access can make a clean run possible. Finished plaster, masonry, insulation, fire-rated assemblies, tight crawlspaces, and exterior walls add drilling, protection, fire stopping, and patching. The quote should say who repairs paint, texture, trim, and ceiling openings. Ask how cable is separated from line-voltage wiring and how penetrations are protected.
Do not pay for Cat 6A performance when the installed jacks, patch cords, or terminations are lower category. CommScope notes that channel performance is governed by the components and connections in the channel. Ask the installer to name the category end to end and to provide the product data for cable, jacks, panel, and patch cords.
Leviton’s enclosure guidance also makes serviceability part of the design. Leave space for the switch, power supply, slack, and future runs; avoid an inaccessible attic box that traps heat or makes troubleshooting difficult. If the network supports powered access points or cameras, ask whether the switch budget and cable bundle design are included.
Request a fixed run count, route assumptions, termination schedule, labels, test deliverable, cleanup, and restoration allowance. Low-voltage cabling still interacts with building and fire rules, so a qualified installer should verify the pathway and local requirements before pulling cable.
Ask whether the proposal includes a network switch, rack or enclosure power, patch cords, and labeling, or only passive cable. A cable can test correctly while the final network remains slow because the switch, router, or patch cord is a lower category or a poor PoE match. Request the test format and the promised result for each run.
For a remodel, photograph cable routes before drywall closes and keep a map of every wall plate and ceiling drop. Leave service loops where the installer’s standard permits and avoid burying an unmarked splice. A slightly higher run count can be cheaper during construction than reopening a finished wall when a new office or access point is added.
